What is Generative Art?
Generative art is commonly known as unique, one-off artwork that is found on the internet. Its ‘being’ generally has come to fruition through an autonomous system. This non-human system can distinguish features of art and change aspects of it independently from a physical artist being present. Some artists claim that the autonomous system adopts the role of the creator while others merely interpret that the system embodies their own artistic vision.
Generative art is predominantly created using computer algorithms and this is often referred to as “algorithmic art”. This generative art (even though autonomous) can only be produced by the system once the artist provides the “recipe” to the final product. After all, a computer system left alone by itself cannot produce art without the initial algorithm provided by the artist, ergo, the artist behind the algorithm is the creator or the Generative art.

Through the generative art process i’ve created Ambient Shape Procedure which is an art set of 60 images produced by procedural imaging techniques. Using a specified pallet, the process can generate unique shape, texture, rotation of a canvas and randomises various pattern tiling algorithms.

Buying generative art via an NFT (non-fungible token) is becoming common place in 2022. An NFT is data stored on a digital ledger, which is called a blockchain and can be sold and traded. Buying digital art via NFT is a way of proving you own that original piece of generative artwork as it cannot be forged or copied. Most purchses of digital Artwork via NFT’s see it as an investment that can either be enjoyed knowing you own a one of a kind piece or later sold on for a profit as the asset increases in value.
